My friend Rachel's sister and her husband live in the subdivision that was hardest hit by the tornado yesterday. Their house was damaged and they can't live in it right now--they're staying with her parents. Even so, they're very lucky--a house three doors down was completely flattened.

The storm hit so quickly, the sirens didn't even have time to sound. Rachel's husband George is a spotter or reporter or whatever for the National Weather Service, so he gets paged whenever there's a severe weather alert. He got the bulletin and immediately called Rachel's sister, who was at home with her two little girls. He didn't even say hello or anything, just shouted into the phone, "Get into the basement NOW!" so she down she went with the girls, under the basement stairs. The all-clear didn't sound, so about 45 minutes later, she went and looked out her front door to see what was going on. And destruction is the only word. Several houses severely damaged, trees downed, her own house with part of the roof and side gone--I can't imagine how it must have been.

The main thing is, no one was hurt or killed. Thank God!

Yes, they are! I just happened to put the TV on and got the surprise of my life when I saw "TORNADO WARNING" in giant red letters on the bottom of the screen, along with the meteorologist talking gravely about the serious storms going through the area! But everyone's ok, and that is, as you said, the main thing.
