My friend Rachel and I are flying to NYC on Monday, seeing Equus on Wednesday, and flying back on Saturday. We plan on doing some of the usual touristy things like seeing the stores, the NY Public Library (OF COURSE!!), stuff like that. What are some other fun, interesting things to do? What are some good ways to save money on food, other than the obvious, such as fast food and buying things to eat in the hotel? Is it true you can't ride in Central Park any more?

Suggestions? Ideas? Anyone? Bueller?

See the Empire State if it isn't raining :) The views are priceless. The fees to see it are worth it. The lines are shorter, later in the day.

Ground Zero is interesting, but there are a great deal of tourists, not to mention construction :S

Buy a MetroCard to ride the Subways. For 7.50 a day for unlimited rides, it is a great investment. During the day, it is probably the best for of transportation.

Eat lunch at Mesa Grill, if you can. It is on 5th avenue at 16th Street. The sign is hard to find though. It is a Bobby Flay restaurant. Fantastic Food.

Liberty as well as Ellis Island is interesting, but one can't go up in the statue anymore. Ellis island is full of national history :)

Macy's is fun too. Try to catch Grand Central just for a look. You may want to plan a meal there one day. They have a great food court. It is on the lower level :) The oyster bay is fantastic as well, if you like seafood.

Museum of Modern Art (5th Avenue at 85th street on the upper east side) is also great fun, but it is closed on Mondays.

They still have the carriages in Central Park, but they are really pricey O.o

For picking up food, there are some great smaller restaurants and shops. (Especially along 5th Avenue, the lower part near downtown, below 20th street)

Chelsea also has great food places :D Chelsea Market (Where the Food Network is) has great shops for food :D

Isn't it heart-breaking that you can't go up the Statue anymore?? It was my dream to go up and the last time I visited, I was able to climb the 12 billion stairs and look out from the crown. Sad that no one else can do that anymore. :(

No, there are still horse-drawn carriages in Central Park. Seven days a week. :)

I've visited NYC a couple times. Don't forget to go to the top of Rockefeller Center (Top of the Rock). The views are breathtaking. Chinatown is a shopper's paradise. There's the Bronx Zoo, too. The Statue of Liberty is great...even though you can't go up anymore. :( You could see the Lower East Side Tenement Museum.

The Corner Bistro is a great cheap restaurant (just get there early). Don't know what you like when it comes to eating, but I think you'd really like Westville. It has more than just sandwiches or burgers, too, all at a really reasonable price. Great breakfast food!! :) Adrienne's Pizza Bar is a great little cheap Italian restaurant. :)

I hope this helped!!

It's true you can't ride in Central Park anymore, the stables have closed down and I say good riddance. I went there and was completely unimpressed. The horses were like machines and I asked for an easy going horse and they gave me one that reared and bucked out when asking it to canter. Thankfully I had experience so it didn't phase me as much as the people walking on the path. The arena they had to ride in was the size of a living room with pillars in the middle. It was horrendous.

Granted yes, I always wanted to ride in Central Park but I didn't have a grand time of it with this horse.

There are plenty of things to see in Central Park for free, museums and art gallery, Empire State Building, I love going to the Disney Store on 5th, it's gorgeous. Time Square is always filled with activities.

Yeah, I'd heard rumors you couldn't ride in Central Park any more, but I wasn't sure if they were true or not... thanks for the heads up. Oh well, it sounds like I'm not missing much! I wonder if it was still Mr. Novgorod running the stables. He had a reputation for having rather rank horses, so it wouldn't be a wonder if you got a bad one! :0

Yeah, they shut the place down. I thought from TV stuff, it would be great to ride in Central Park, but not on horses that look like they rather die than be in that riding school. They did not look "happy" at all.

Have a good time in NYC anyways!
