It's begun

The renovations on my house started today. The kitchen is ripped completely apart. Literally. No sink, no stove (YAY!!! I hated that piece of shit that never worked right!), no counters, no cupboards. The refrigerator is in what used to be the dining room.

The cats are utterly confused. Buster keeps trying to stand up against the plastic sheeting separating the living room and kitchen/dining room. What a surprise he had when he attempted it while standing on the table. Evy is frankly terrified; she's been rather spooky since I accidentally set off the alarm system last week when she was standing right next to me.

Lots of interesting little items turned up under the refrigerator--cat toys, pills, a bottle of nail polish (how on earth did THAT get there???), cherry tomatoes that Buster kept stealing and rolling around the floor, a key to I-don't-know-what, Buster's makeup brushes (he knocks them under there and tries to fish them out, with varying success).

The stove (that horrible, HORRIBLE electric, outdated thing) arc'd when they pulled out the plug. It was a 60 volt plug in a 40 volt outlet. I was damn lucky a fire hadn't started! It's now in pieces on the lawn, waiting to go into the dumpster. They're putting in a gas hookup and I'm having the electrical system updated.

I'm looking at new stoves. [livejournal.com profile] jarlsberg71, do you know what's a good brand of gas cooktop/gas convection oven stove, possibly with a grill?

Can you tell I HATE that old stove???

Tomorrow they start on the bathroom. It's a wreck, literally, with holes in the wall--not from the demolition; because the damned house was in such poor shape when we bought it and all this wasn't disclosed to us.

I'm not looking forward to all the construction work...

Vulcan and Viking are two of the best, and shockingly so is frigidaire. (shrug)

On the grill part, I'm going to ask "Why?" Cause indoor grills are neat, but they're VERY messy, VERY smokey (despite all but commercial grade exhaust fans) and when they're in conjunction with a stove, (especially gas) it means the spatter gets EVERYWHERE. and you'll do more cleaning of the burners than using them.

OK, so suppose I ditch the idea of a grill. What is a good regular stove? I'm not so sure about Viking because my friend Rachel's father nearly set their kitchen floor on fire with theirs! But I DO want gas cooktop/gas convection oven. I know electric oven is supposedly the way to go, but I've heard of so many people having trouble with theirs. Is Kitchen Aid a good brand?

(I'm not totally sold on Frigidaire, I'm afraid, since that was what the dishwasher that we bought for this house was and it was nothing but trouble.) Jenn Aire? Good old Kenmore?

I would def ditch the idea of griddles/grills, A LOT of work/mess/cleanup for the few times you'll use them.

what about GE? they make awesome ranges and even have that quartz oven for heating up things like pizzas and other items at REALLY high temps. (1500....)

Oh this one has me squidging....

I don't know what you think of GE, but I have their Fridge, Dishwasher and Washer/Dryer. (I put detergent in the washer back when we got it in October, haven't had to put new stuff in. It dispenses what it needs, when it needs it. LOVE LOVE LOVE IT. (also, my dishwasher has a full resevoir for keeping detergent so I only need to fill that like every 2 months...

Rachel has a GE stove and she really likes it... she recommended it. I don't know if hers is as fancy as this, but it looks nice!

Hehehehehehehe, that is funny about the cats.

I would be great if you posted before and after pictures :D

I hope the remodeling goes well :D

Viking makes gas stoves with grills, but they are rather expensive.

The cats are hilarious. Buster is, by nature, a funny cat. :D I took "before" pictures as best I could, because my camera battery was dying, so now I need to take "after" pictures. I hope it all turns out well!

I'm starting to rethink a stove with a grill. :/
